Hrew up painting and drawing a lot. I used to always draw golf course layouts for some reason. It seemed fun to draw sand traps, water hazards and to be in complete control of where they were and what shape they were in. I must have drawn 1,000 courses when I was a kid. Painting was always fun, usually painting still life and that sort of thing. I remember drawing hands and faces a lot too, always in pencil. Hands were always the hardest to draw and still are to this day.
My father worked in a photography studio as a designer and I was around that for a couple years during high school. I think at that time I actually thought maybe I could do what he did for a career. It looked fun; you worked in the dark, got to play crazy music all day, and could draw and be creative all day. Once I moved to California in 1997, I was living on the beach and started painting again. Soon after this I was enrolled at the Art Institue of California – San Diego.
I graduated with Honors from the Art Institute of California – San Diego with a Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design. I love getting my hands dirty working on a variety of freelance projects under the alias DESIGNByRDS. I try to combine hand drawn elements, multiple textures and other odd materials to add originality to my artwork. Inspired heavily by: typography, patterns, apparel, fabric, anything aged or worn, old books, paint, anything hand made.

CBASS, when you swing in, would you explain a little about the design? I’m sure other RIPTers would like to know the influence behind the piece.
Congrats on your print!

First off, thank you RIPT Apparel, DCAY and all of you for your support. To me, this design is pretty personal…it’s about relationships, trust and learning from mistakes. I’ve been burned a few times in the past year so this artwork just came out naturally. I think when bad things happen in life, it’s just a test to see how you’ll react to it. If it means something different to you, great. I think it’s beautiful when people can look at art and have it mean something personal to them. Thanks again for your support!
