I’m a designer from Frome, Somerset in the South West of the UK and I’m currently living in Bristol, also in the South West.
I’ve only really been designing for a couple of months but In my spare time when I’m not creating artwork I enjoy listening to music, playing the guitar, going to gigs and watching films.
I came up with the idea for this design while I was wearing my own red Converse and wondering why I hadn’t seen a pair made up to look like Sonic’s shoes.
…I haven’t actually painted a white stripe onto mine yet but I’m thinking about it.

If you throw a ring in there does that make it a Sonic shirt? I love sonic and chucks but I’m not digging this shirt!! Sorry! Please explain the pun?

This is the most exclusive sonic shirt ever!!’ I love it
Meimi132
omg… I love it, I do. I just wish I had some money T-T. But this, ROCKS. Bet my bro would love it, and WHY haven’t they made Sonic shoes in real life? Would be so awesome…

Hi everyone, thanks for the (couple of) positive comments! I’d just like to thank RIPT for printing my design and to thank anyone in advance who buys a tee! :)
Chris
The Hedgehog’s shoes are styled exactly like those. The only thing that would make this more Sonic would be the hedgehog himself.
Jonathan Hovland
I like the shirt, if it were on dark (Sonic) blue it would definitely be a buy. I can’t wear red though, I end up looking like the Fruit of the Loom apple or a tomato.
lee_byway
Thanks for the comments Chris and Jonathan, my original design was on a Sonic blue T-shirt but to minimise the number of colours so that it could be printed I had to make the red of the shoes the red of the shirt. Red’s my favourite colour though so I’m not complaining :)
Kira
@Funkd : Its Sonic, not just because of the ring, but because the chucks are designed like Sonic’s shoes.
jeff
think it woulda been kinda cool if sonics head was where the chuck star would be…just a thought
like the simplicity of it
lee_byway
Thanks Jeff. Now that you mention it that actually would have been cool and it sounds so obvious, I wish I’d thought of it, lol

Once the page loaded, BOOM! Sonic shirt!! loves it, loves it, I know a couple of friends who are going to be digging this one for real.
Nice art Lee, great to see new artists takin over RIPT :D
Cheers!
Russ
I am not understanding what this has to do with sonic. And who is in charge of letting these shirts become available on the website. What ever is bellow the shoe looks like a pork chop and I can’t tell if it is receding into the background or coming towards me.
wil
hahah, this is a pretty cool idea but i feel like a lot of people would ask me why i had a shoe stepping on a donut on my shirt…
lee_byway
Thanks D4N13L, I love your designs by the way, especially Jell-oBoy and the Undefined Age Martial Artist Tortoises!
For anyone that doesn’t really understand this T-shirt this is how I came up with it: I was wearing my own red Converse one day and I looked down at them and thought “If these had a white stripe they would kind of look like Sonic’s shoes”. That’s how simple my brain is.
So the design is literally just a pair of red Converse with a white stripe to make them look like Sonic’s shoes, and the grey “pork chop” is the sole of one shoe which the other shoe is resting on. I only added the ring because the design looked plain without it. …By the way Sonic collects rings in his games if you’ve never played any of them.

Thanks Wil, yeah unless you know Sonic games it might look a bit odd, but today I’m wearing my Sonic Suit T-shirt (which I bought on RIPT the other week!) and I just laugh when people look at it who obviously don’t have a clue what it’s supposed to be, lol

Hello. This is my first comment on here, but I thought I would pop up and give my 2 cents. I see a some bashing, but maybe some constructive criticism would be more appreciated.
I don’t think this shirt sucks by any means, just not my cup of tea (not really into Sonic enough to buy a T based on it).
Anyways, I know at my school our teacher told us to never draw a hand that looked like a claw shape [the side of the thumb and one finger (in life drawing)] because there was too little information that it will always just look like a claw, and maybe that is why people think it looks like a pork chop. Although I think the little details in the bottom of that shoe is enough for me to understand that it is a shoe, maybe you could have drawn more of the top of shoe in the background, or maybe some more details in the bottom as treds (although I don’t know what the treds look like on the bottom of a converse, so maybe that wasn’t an option).
And to be honest, that ring did look like a doughnut at first to me until I read the title of the shirt and noticed it was Sonic, but maybe if it was a bright yellow instead of a golden brown (mmm doughnuts) it would look less like a doughnut and more like what it is supposed to resemble.
This is just some constructive criticism on my part, and you can take it or leave it :)
Anyways, a huge congratulation on the printing and good luck with the rest of your designs!

Give someone a free donut and a pork chop today.
Congrats on the printing. I hope it sells for ya but I’m not interested.
lee_byway
Thanks for the comment K Sera, the constructive critism is much appreciated.
I like to create pretty simple designs (or maybe I’m just not a good enough designer yet to create anything more complicated, I’ve only been doing this a few months) so I basically just wanted to use as few lines as possible. And I did try using a bright yellow for the ring but to me it didn’t really look right and clashed with the red so I went with the golden yellow colour.
I know the design won’t appeal to everyone but if it only sells a few T-shirts that’s good enough for me :) …I doubt that would be good enough for RIPT but I’m sure they’ll print a better design tomorrow that will make up for it, lol
sam
good idea, but skip. you should really use some art from http://www.scottblairart.com
Jenny
I think the shoes should’ve been a different color. It blends in with the shirt’s color so it doesn’t stand out much.
james
if the shirt were blue, id probably buy it
Buzatron
Awesome shirt! Makes me want to go play some old-school Sega Genesis. I was kinda addicted to the original Sonic, but I liked the “off-shoot” versions too like when they came out with Sonic pinball ect. MAN those were addicting!

Hey Lee…
Wanted to give some feedback…I like it. You say you’ve only been doing it for a couple months. Keep it up, you’ll only get better. I dig the less obvious tees. It makes them worth ordering if only a few people get it. It makes it more exclusive, kinda making me feel like a grown up cool kid :)
midgerock
Give Lee a free hug today! Congrats on your first print Lee. Don’t let the negative get to you. Take from that may be of any use and throw out the rest. Very solid concept and clean design. Red is a hard color to sell it appears. I hear that a lot not just here but elsewhere as well. And the 4 color limit does make it difficult. I hope see more designs from you in the future. Keep on rockin’ Lee and Ript as well!!!
lee_byway
Thanks Buzzatron, Stephanie and Midgerock, the positive comments are really appreciated! And thanks to anyone that did buy a tee today and to RIPT for printing it :) Fingers crossed it won’t be too long before I have another one printed!
