Closed Circuit Mickey

Ohhh Zyecks. I am not going to buy this shirt but for your sake, I hope that many people do and that you gain many fans.
“Mickey is pretty iconic, he’s a symbol of childlike innocence. Why not mess with his image a little…”
Mickey is far more than what you’ve described him to be. And I believe that, with your “Scanned. 8-bit’d. Here it is” concept of t-shirt design, you’ve made a real mess of Mickey. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, since the names of the original animators of Walt Disney, who worked so hard to move forward in their new trade, are missing from your list of “so many artists i dig”.

meh, im sorry that you feel that way redeye, but they’re are millions of other mickey parodies out there, many of which are more blatant rips of your beloved character. i respect that mickey has had a huge impact on society and art, that is why i wanted to alter him; “Mickey” being a mess is supposed to evoke emotion, seems like i got one from you right? it seems that youre also mad at the fact that i gave no credit to the original animators. yes it is true, but if i was such a fan of disney as you percieve me to be, i wouldve known who they were.

our culture and our view of art evolves when different artists remix and refresh our old ideas. would these original animators want other people to stop creating and innovating, just so that they can keep their character; just so that they can make their pretty penny while everyone’s creativity is stunted? actually, these trailblazers took from old and previous media and matched them with the times.

i totally see where you are coming from redeye, and i respect your decision not to buy. i did not alter mickey because “oh, mickey is popular and ill make alot of money”, i altered him because i think that people need to see mickey in a different light. i suggest you watch Rip! The Remix Manifesto; theres a very interesting section about good ol’ disney that i think youd like to see.
actually, i suggest everyone watch it, the website i linked in this comment will lead you to a very awesome documentary.

    thanks,
    ZYECKS

Geez kid. You are really full of it. I don’t know where to start! Sorry, riptapparel, but I’ve purchased many shirts from ya’ll and I believe that I deserve a chance to address Mr. Rimando’s statement. I will be as polite as I can:
    1) I can’t believe that there are “millions of other mickey parodies out there”. C’mon……millions?
    2) Mickey Mouse is not “beloved” to me. Nor do I believe he is a “symbol of childlike innocence”. “He” is a character that originated in early American animation.
    3) I disagree that this character “has had a huge impact on society and art”. Really?
    4) Your design, which started off as “a random doodle”, evolved into art that you created for the purpose of evoking emotion in the viewer. Is that right? Not to just “mess with his image a little. Scanned. 8 bit’d. Here it is”? So, Christian, what emotions were you expecting this to evoke? Seriously.
    5) I never stated, perceived, nor insinuated that you are a fan of disney. Au contraire.
    6) Thanks for the lesson on the evolution of culture and art. Who woulda thunk it? That whole paragraph is really weird. Do you think that my comments support the stunting of creativity? All I said was “you’ve made a real mess of Mickey.”
    7) It pleases me to know that you respect my decision not to buy this t-shirt. In turn, I will respect your decision to “think that people need to see mickey in a different light.” That’s very revelatory of you.
    8) Thanks for the tip on “Rip! The Remix Manifesto”. I will definately check it out.

I just had a good laugh, realizing how silly this whole discussion is. Now I really know why, when people want to describe something inferior, inefficient or just plain lame, they describe it as being “Mickey Mouse”.

Good luck with your future endeavors, ZYECKS.

yes, redeye i am a kid, and i do have a lot to learn in this business. but just because im young, doesnt mean im allowed to just take crap from people. i took offense to the “mess” comment and essentially went on a mindless rant.

but, i think we can squash this. you definitely should check out the documentary. and thanks for the “good luck”, sarcasm or not.

redeye seriously, stop trolling and trying to sound cool, you’re obviously stupid

Wow guys. I’ve been out all day long and I normally let TJ and Paul post comments but I don’t feel this tee is any thing to get all worked up about. It is an interpretation of an iconic figure. If you don’t like it it redeye that is your opinion and we want you to share it. I just hope that you can treat our artists with respect. It’s not easy to put yourself out there at such a young age. I think you did a great job Zyecks!

I like the artwork for the tee but I wouldn’t buy it either. I enjoy checking this site out daily but suggest this artist needs to grow up before he actually begins to interact w/people.

    this is cool
